Hot List Q & A
ACCESS TESTING

Question:

Will the Access test results have cut offs for each proficiency level, for determining appropriate placement?

Reply:
The only cut-off score or level that the state will establish is that which signals when a student is ready for the mainstream and can continue to learn in English-only classes. LM at NJDOE The level-specific cut points have been established by WIDA to distinguish students at each language proficiency level.

Question:
We are using the Mac now for levels and when I compare Access score results when they finally come out with the Mac level scores we have used to determine levels for students moving from level to level, there are obvious discrepancies. Students who would have exited based on the Mac did not attain an exit score based on the Access. Since high school make schedules in May for the following September, we cannot wait for the Access scores for exit or placement. We are in a dilemma for an accurate way to determine placement which accurately reflects results from two tests with quite different standards.

Reply:
You may use the W-APT for placement purposes. The state is examining the possibility of moving the ACCESS test to earlier in the year. This will not be the 2006-07 school year. The MAC is a different test with different standards and does not factor “academic language” into their definition of language proficiency, which is why the ACCESS for ELLs standard is higher.
Remember the importance of using multiple criteria to determine placement. Student classwork, the recommendations of teachers, test scores, etc should be factored into the decision. If the student is mainstreamed and then has difficulty next year, due to language, they can always be re-scheduled for ESL. Lori Ramella, NJDOE

Question:
Do you have to give the new test? I don't believe that it is a required test to give and you can continue to use your LAS or IPT for placement.

Reply:
The ACCESS is mandated in the spring for all districts. However, districts may continue to use the LAS, IPT or MAC for placement now. (Fall 2006) Districts may also use the WIDA Access for Placement (W-APT) screening (you can download from the site with password which was sent to your testing coordinator and chief school administrator). SO there is flexibility in screening but not in spring testing. I hope this clarifies this. You can contact Lori Ramella if you need further clarification. lori.ramella@doe.state.nj.us
