The purpose of the symposium is to give students a venue to present their research/ideas/experiences/materials
and to discuss their work with peers and teacher education faculty. The format, which will include collaborative
and cooperative conversations, should provide students with support for and responses to their projects.
Through this dialogue, we hope to continue the NJTESOL/NJBE tradition of building a conference community that
shares information, participates in discussions, and learns from one another. We encourage you to submit a
proposal to this new session at our Spring Conference.
Who can submit a proposal?
Full-time or part-time students enrolled in graduate programs leading to master’s degrees in TESOL, Bilingual Education
or other related fields can participate in the NJTESOL/NJBE Graduate Student Forum.
What kinds of presentations are being solicited?
- A paper (20 minutes): This is a summary, with a few references or citations, describing a project which has been completed
or which is in process, that is related to both theory and practice. You can provide handouts and use audiovisual aids.
- A demonstration (20 minutes): This is a way of showing a technique for teaching or testing. You can spend about 5 minutes
explaining the theory that underlies the technique. You can provide handouts and use audiovisual aids.
What are the proposal guidelines?
After you click on the "I accept" button, please fill out the form which includes the title of your presentation, your name,
university affiliation, mailing & email address.
Write a 250-word abstract of your presentation that clearly shows how your research fits into the themes of the conference,
and a 50-word description for the program. When writing your abstract consider the following:
- What does your audience already know about your topic?
- Do they need any background information to understand your thesis?
- Do you need to define special terms?
You can include citations in your abstract if they help clarify your thesis, but they are not necessary. If you do include references, keep them to a minimum. The abstract should reflect your work and be written in your voice.
