SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS: Bilingual Elementary

A Presenter that You Don't Want to Miss

By Maggie Manson

During this year’s Spring Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick don’t miss the rare opportunity to hear professionals in the field share the latest information on educational practices.  The presenters will discuss educational challenges that we are all confronted with daily.

The Bilingual Elementary Special Interest Group (SIG) will be holding a forty-five minute discussion both days, Wednesday and Thursday.  Those attending will be asked to share concerns, questions, comments, and ideas regarding elementary bilingual students and/or classes.  Anyone who has any good news or experiences relating to elementary bilingual students and practices within their districts is invited to share them during these sessions.

Returning to the NJTESOL/NJBE conference is Ivelis Sanfilippo presenting a workshop entitled, “Having Fun in a Dual Language Classroom."  Mrs. Sanfilippo is a passionate educator currently working in a dual language program.  Her workshop provides participants with information and hands-on experience to create and use games that will enrich language.  The games will develop higher-order thinking, giving teachers the opportunity to differentiate instruction.  Educators will also view and listen to songs that have catchy lyrics that motivate the children to move and learn new vocabulary with enthusiasm.  Participants will walk away with ready-to-use materials that can be modified for use in their classrooms.  This presenter will also discuss general websites and apps that can be used in the classroom to promote technology in literacy and language development in a dual language classroom  We look forward to meeting everyone who is planning on attending the annual conference.  See you there!
