SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS: ESL Secondary

By Caia Schlessinger

This year’s NJTESOL/NJBE Spring Conference will be held on May 30th and May 31st, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick. The conference theme is ‘Success for ELLs across the Curriculum.’ As the ESL Secondary SIG Representative, I am really looking forward to meeting all of you at our SIG meeting, which is held on both days of the conference. The SIG meetings are a great place to come and interact with other ESL and bilingual teachers from across the state of New Jersey. The SIG meetings, titled ‘Current Issues in High School ESL’, are tentatively scheduled at 2:15 on Wednesday and at 12:15 on Thursday. Please look at the tentative workshop schedule for more information: http://www.njtesol-njbe.org/spring-conference/PrelimSched12.pdf.

There are some great workshops that will be of interest to ESL secondary teachers. Specifically, I will give a workshop titled ‘Sheltered Language Arts at the High School Level.’ I will bring samples of adapted books that I use with introductory, intermediate, and low advanced students. I will also share successful strategies that I have developed with my colleagues. Another informative workshop titled ‘Newcomer ELLs in High School’ will address strategies and effective methods of working with Port of Entry students and SIFEs (students with interrupted formal education) who arrive during their high school years. Again, please check the preliminary workshop schedule titles of workshops that pertain to secondary ESL teachers.

There has been a lot of discussion on the Hotlist recently about ACCESS for ELLs test administration. Please make sure to review the information in the ACCESS for ELLs Test Administration Manual and the Test Administrator’s Script. It is imperative that you do this in order to maintain the security and the integrity of this very important assessment. We will discuss ACCESS for ELLs testing, the WIDA standards, AHSA, HSPA, and many other pertinent topics at the ESL Secondary SIG meeting at the spring conference. See you then!
