About Us

Mission Statement

NJTESOL/NJBE, Inc. is a not-for-profit professional and educational organization whose purposes are:

1.  To actively support the development of bilingual education and the teaching of English as a Second Language;

2.  To strengthen instruction at all levels;

3.  To disseminate educational information as related to professional development;

4.  To provide educational services such as workshops, conferences, and consulting assistance;

5.  To promote scholarship and foster research in first and second language acquisition and bilingual/bicultural studies; and

6.  To cooperate in appropriate ways with other groups having similar interests and concerns.

JANUARY 14 Bergen-Passaic Chapter, (Snow date of January 21, 2014):  “A Clap, A Rap, An IPad App; Using Music in the ELL Classroom”.  Join us for this engaging workshop as Hilary Almeida, ESL Teacher, Teaneck Public Schools, will offer participants a fresh perspective on how music can be used in the ELL classroom.
New Location: Oradell Public Library, 375 Kinderkamack Ave., 4:00-5:15pm.

MARCH 22   Bergen-Passaic Saturday Workshop:  William Paterson University, 9:00am – 12:00pm: "What Teachers of ELLs Need to Know about the CCSS and English Language Learners." Dr. Erin Haynes will provide an overview of the CCS Standards, with a focus on the specific linguistic demands they place on ELLs.  She will describe scaffolding strategies to help ELLs acquire academic vocabulary, read texts closely, analyze complex sentences, and write to sources. Examples are from elementary, middle school, and secondary texts. Breakout sessions will allow participants to get hands-on experience developing CCS standards-aligned ESL instruction

MARCH 26-29 TESOL  2014: International  Convention and English Language Expo; Portland, Oregon
